what is it like being a material handler? what do you do you a day to day basis?
My name is Ilani and im currently enrolled in a job corps program. it is a program that will help you get your high school diploma/ ged and also help you get a trait, as well as find a job. Im interested in material handling but would like to know exactly what im getting myself into and what a material handler does on a day to day basis. Any information about material handling would be GREATLY appreciated and really helpful.

Elisa has offered you a good answer. I would add that the skills you learn from Job Corps will prepare you to be able to perform a variety of jobs in your community, neighborhood or a close bus ride away. It is a good first job and can be available with employers like Walmart.

Material handlers work in warehouses and production facilities to move products. This might mean finding materials on the shelves and wrapping them and putting them on a delivery truck, or pulling materials off the truck and putting them in the proper shelf spot. Material handlers make sure production areas are fully stocked and have the products they need to fulfill orders and move quickly, sometimes working with automated machines or sensors to fulfill the orders.

Material Handlers perform a variety of different tasks within a warehouse which will vary by industry. Typically with the use of a forklift, ride on pallet jack or some other equipment you may pull material based on a sales order for various customers. Other common job titles may include material operators or storekeepers depending upon the industry. Some organizations utilize a warehouse management software in order to release sales orders to be picked - this may mean that you utilize an RF scanner to properly go to the correct location to find material on your sales orders as well as to ensure you pick the correct quantity. Other functions in material handling may include cycle counting, bin replenishment, unloading inbound material, sort/separate inbound material, shrink wrap outbound material, load outbound trucks for shipment.
