That’s a very admirable goal! You will need to earn a four year undergraduate degree and then apply to medical school. After fours of medical school you will need to get accepted into a residency program focused on neurology or neurosurgery depending on your goal. Good luck!

Hi Omary!

Neurosurgery and neurology are great fields requiring a medical doctorate. This means that you will have to complete college with a bachelor’s degree as well as all of the Pre-med requirements. GPA should probably be 3.5 or better. You will also have to score well on the MCAT. Once accepted to medical school. You will need to choose whether you would like to be a brain surgeon (neurosurgery) or a physician that medically treats brain problems (neurologist). Neurosurgery is a 6 or 7 year residency and neurology is 4 years of residency training after medical school.

I think Rachel's answer is great! I agree that the most important factors for applying to medical school are the MCAT score and Grade Point Average (GPA) from your 4 year college. Just make sure that you fulfill all of the Pre-Med requirements while in college. Once you have been accepted to medical school, you will studying and gain experience in different fields of medicine for 4 years. Then you will apply to be a neurologist or neurosurgeon. Another very interesting field of medicine you may want to consider is psychiatry. It also deals with brains and how they work. After medical school, the amount of education you will need will depend on the field of medicine you decide upon, but it will be at least 3 more years.
