Can you raise a family and still be a surgeon?

I've heard that it's difficult to be a mother and still hold down a full time job, is this true? #medicine

Dheeraj’s Answer

Surgery is one of the harder specialities and with today's production pressure it is difficult for a general surgeon to have a good work-life balance.
You should shadow a surgical trainee and decide if the lifestyle is good for you.

Martin’s Answer

anything is possible with good support and a good company, of course one gift a surgeon has is the ability to focus and make precise decisions therefore can not be distracted by lifestyle pressures of time constraints to be with family in times when work responsibility calls.

Richard’s Answer

During medical school and residency, you won’t be in control of your own schedule which makes family time difficult to obtain. However, after training, you can be in more control and can choose what practice to join based on your needs. You can work less and have more time for family at the cost of making less money and possibly consulting on less interesting cases.
