First off, congratulations on having a clear vision on what sector you’d like to work in. Digital marketing is a large, growing market and those who possess the skills to excel will be in high demand in the future. My agency offers digital marketing, so I’m familiar with the skills it takes to perform well in this role. I’ll break it down into the two components: digital and marketing

DIGITAL
- Google Analytics
This service tracks and reports website traffic, and is the most widely used web analytics service in the world. You can become certified in Google Analytics, and you can access information about its usage for free. In digital marketing, clients will absolutely benefit from the insight these analytics can provide.

  • Google Adwords
Adwords is Google’s paid advertising portion. These are the results you see first when you Google something and it says “Ad” next to them. The clients only pay for the service when someone clicks on their Ad. Knowing how to operate and becoming certified in Adwords are an integral part of working in digital marketing

  • SEO (Search engine optimization)
Search Engine Optimization is a process to ensure your online content is more likely to come up in online searches. This is similar to Google Adwords, but this is not a paid service. SEO is a method of working to get a client’s content seen as much as possible.

MARKETING
First off, you need to have experience with marketing as a whole. Take a few marketing classes to learn the basics of what you’ll need to succeed.

  • Advertising / Public relations / social media
The way the communications industry is going, successful professionals need to know a little bit about every aspect of communications. At my agency, we have separate roles but work as a team to accomplish well-rounded goals for clients. We’re not all working in silos -- we’re able to coordinate and accomplish. If you want to work in digital marketing, you may be employed at a full-service communications agency, so it’s beneficial to have an overview of what everyone does.

  • Sales
This is an outstanding skill to have in a digital marketing position. You may very well need to sell digital marketing solutions and packages to clients. Even if the position you are applying for does not require a sales background, it couldn’t hurt to take some classes and learn the basics of sales.

I hope this is helpful for you. Luckily for you, there are also bountiful resources out there for you to learn more about everything you need to know about digital marketing.

I would go to college and study art and design, as well as web design. Then find someone in the field to mentor with. Find as many internships. I say this because it will help you to network and find work, but digital marketing is ever changing and most college curriculums are most likely outdated in this area. Find any opportunity to work with people who are doing it now. But at the end of day as Gary Vaynerchuk says (follow him - he is the guru in the field) it's all about selling "stuff". So understanding about marketing and also having a sense of business. In this role your customers will be business people who have their time, money, sweat, and tears on the line. Knowing their businesses and the issues they face is key to being successful. The more you understand your customer the better you can help them. The other tip here is becoming a customer trusted advisor. Think about building relationships with people in that they trust you. I have found the ones who go for the quick buck for something they know that won't work for their customers end up losing customers and money in the long run. The ones who establish relationships (many times these turn into friendships) end up winning year after year.

Thank you comment icon To be qualified, study marketing, web design, and digital media arts. Learn how to tell a story with video as well. Charlie Forbes

I have a BS in entrepreneurship and finance. I got my first job in a start-up marketing agency where my love for marketing really began. I am currently a marketing manager in a big accounting firm based out of US. Looking back at what has made me successful is having that life-long learner mentality more than my degree. Digital marketing is a very broad area and is ever evolving. Staying on top of latest trends, technical evolutions in systems, search engines, etc. is more of the required qualification in digital marketing than having a master in the area. Having Google certification certainly helps as Google is the leading player in this industry. Having a clear understanding of its mechanics is certainly a plus point in the market.

I will suggest to take free course from Google Academy and Facebook. It should give you an idea of what is digital marketing(advertising) and digital analytics. Statistics and data analytics skills are essential skills to be a good digital marketer.

This is a very good blog for you to check out. https://www.optimizesmart.com/
Thank you comment icon Hi Jacky! This is great advice. Could you comment also on qualifications in terms of degrees/training/certifications etc.? Alexandra Carpenter, Admin

You've already received some great advice, but I would go even one step further... if you serious about digital marketing, make sure you have a strong understanding not only of the concepts and the tools, but also of the technology. If you have a skill like HTML coding or even can work well in image creation/editing software, you will be one step ahead of many. Many people I work with in digital marketing are highly technical, and I can tell you technical skills are sought in the marketplace to accompany the business and general marketing knowledge.

Good luck!

Digital marketing is a very broad field so it totally depends on what part of Digital marketing you are referring to. You should spend some time understanding what part of digital marketing you are more drawn to. Part of it requires very strong analytics mindset/skill while other part of it requires a creating mindset. If you have a combination of both, you are a winner.
