Ray’s Answer

While I was studying filmmaking at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, I worked with a student who had also studied sound design & mixing at Full Sail University in Florida. He was by far the best "sound guy" we all knew. I know I was one of several people who hired him to sound mix our senior films.

Hello Neimad!

I cannot really answer your question because I didn't go to school in the US, and I'm a college drop out from Brazil. But that in certain way that answers your question: you do not HAVE to go to college to be a film editor. It doesn't mean you shouldn't thought. Had I got a diploma (and a masters) I could get a job teaching filmmaking in a university, I could have a more competitive resume when applying for other jobs. Also, in film school you will find like minded people to collaborate with, you will experiment other positions in filmmaking to make sure that editing is really your thing.

I'd recommended you start by reaching out to film editors in your area, see if you can shadow them, be their assistant.

You can also learn on how to use editing programs for free (for a month) using Lynda.com and downloading free trial of editing programs, I think that the main ones offer 1 month free trial: Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, Avid. Just an important side note: learning to use an editing program is not the same as learning to edit. But it is one good first step. After that you can try to find no-budget films to collaborate for free.

Good luck!
