I want to be a rapper

I'm 19 and autistic and I want to be a rapper but it's hard for me to because I'm autistic. Is there anything you can do to help me.

Go for it! You can be a rapper even if you’re autistic. Look at it as a super power , because you see things different from other people. Music is all about being artistic and expressing yourself the best way you know how. Everyone can’t do that but you’re gifted because you can.

I want to introduce you to a rapper who has Asperger’s syndrome , which is a form of Autism. His name is Sam the Sentient. He is very lyrical and speaks a lot about his journey. I think this would be good for you to watch for inspiration. My advice for you is, if you want it go for it. Continue working hard at your craft, practice makes perfect. The music industry is a tough business but never stop believing yourself.

Being autistic has nothing to do with it. If anything, it may be to your advantage in that you may see things from a completely different perspective than others. You can get beats from YouTube to practice with and if you find one from a producer that you really like, you can buy the license to use it from them. If you don’t know anyone who records, you can get a free or inexpensive recording setup and do it yourself. Don’t let a label of autism or anything else hold you back from doing what you want to do. You just might be the next big thing!

Rapping is fun and a really excellent art form. There have been some genius rap artists is the last 30 years or so who have illuminated the times and created some very memorable songs and tracks.

I may be a little old fashioned, but I urge you to remember that rap is a musical genre, so having an understanding of music would be very helpful. Learning to play an instrument and/or sing would provide a great foundation.

Also important, many rap artists create their own beats, so learning beat making would also be helpful in getting started.

There are schools and colleges that provide some very progressive education programs in all kinds of music, music recording, beat making, music business, and music software; I encourage you to look for some schools and programs that interest you.

The Internet is an overwhelming place, but it is such a fantastic resource if you search carefully. I learned how to mix and master music on a computer entirely by watching YouTube. There are some really good rappers on there who enthusiastically share their knowledge and will even respond to questions and comments from viewers and subscribers.

Finally, listen to rap music! Which rappers do you like? Why do you like them? Do you think you can make music like them? Perhaps you could learn to rap along with them, imitate your favorite rappers. I enjoy doing that from time to time with my favorite singers.

Regarding Autism, I don’t know much about that, perhaps some other professional will have some good advice in that area. But I do know this: people with Autism have passions, interests and hobbies just like everyone else and there is absolutely no reason why those passions should not be pursued.
