Fred’s Answer

I was a theatre major. In fact, it's my only degree. I have been a math teacher, retail store assistant manager, airline reservation agent, and for the past 20+ years, an IT professional. Some of these required additional schooling, but not an additional degree.

The theatre background always comes in handy. You learn to work with other people, to listen to what they are saying, to organize, plan, and communicate...

Many people end up working in a field that is not directly related to their major.

Neil’s Answer

Theater is a lot of fun to work in. There are a lot of specialties to pursue. You can work with costumes or makeup. Other specialties include set design or lighting design and being a stage manager (if you're great at organizing!) With a major in theater you could work at theaters in your area, or even go on the road, touring with shows. You can also find work at resorts and on cruise ships. Working in theater brings a lot of late hours and hard work but it also means having a lot of fun.

Neil recommends the following next steps:

working or volunteering at a local theater.
