How many years of college should I take?
Hello, I am a student who would like to be a social worker when I get older. I have a project in my English class where I have to learn about a job that might interest me when I get older. How long do most people in this career go to college for? Thank you for your time.

Hello, Danica !
The usual and qualifying college Degree to be a Social Worker is a Masters Degree in Social Work. Your state of Ohio does require people to be Licensed, but not Certified. I would highly recommend being Certified even though it's not required in Ohio. My suggestion is to do both Licensing and Certification.
In Ohio, you can get certified at the Bachelors in Social Work Degree level and then a higher certification at the Masters level.
Most people obtain the Masters Degree but some also go on for their PhD which is not required to obtain a Social Work position. I've only known one person who ever obtained their PhD in Social Work.
The social work path in college takes 6 years and should not be short cut, accelerated or sped up or within a double major. It's a lot to learn in this major, plus experience through internships or volunteer work and projects. Students should take the entire six years.
I hope this helps and best wishes with your school project !
