What is the best way to go about getting an internship in zoology

I am a current biology/zoology major freshman and will be a sophomore this 25-26 semester. This is when students at my school are expected to look for internships and I am very nervous about asking and applying.
I just want someone insight on the best way to go about finding an internship?

Hi Emma,

I just love that you are going for zoology! There is no way around it, you'll have to ask and apply for internships. Check what you department's requirements are for the internship (what roles are acceptable, length of the internship)

To find internships, you can look on Indeed, LinkedIn and other job boards for openings that are advertised. Your professional society probably has a job board too. You can ask senior students in your department where they went and if they liked it. You can ask your professors if they can recommend any internships.

You can put your thinking cap on and look for places where they deal with animals in some capacity and where you could learn something. If you have an idea what you want to do with your degree, i.e. in which direction you want to go, you can look for something similar. For example if you plan to be a veterinarian, visit local vet offices and just ask. If you plan to work in wildlife/nature conservation, look for organizations in that field. If you love lab work, look for a position in a lab.

Keep in mind that internships are not necessarily advertised. Sometimes it's just a matter of asking.

Examples:
The Zoo: https://lafayette.in.gov/1672/Internships (you can also volunteer at the zoo)
Wulf Park: https://ag.purdue.edu/department/nres/job-board/pages/wolf-park-internship-program.html
Purdue: https://www.bio.purdue.edu/Academic/undergrad/internships.html

I hope this helps! All the best to you!
