Personally, I think SLO is a lovely little town with character and close enough to the beach that you could be there often. Cal Poly SLO is considered a party school, so there must be something going on. But compared to SF, it's of course very small, and if you are looking for raging night life, you might be disappointed.
I would recommend to give it a shot. You might just like it. If it's not exciting enough for you, you can switch to a 4-year university in 2 years. Talk to your academic advisors which courses to take to get credit if you want to switch.
