Is college scary?
Is being out of state, more independent, and being by yourself scary? How do people cope with being homesick?

At times, yes! But it's also exciting, fulfilling, and a great way to create your "chosen family." Take the opportunity to find your people. Live in a dorm, join clubs, go to events, and get out of your comfort zone! I found that as a freshman, I was in the same boat as hundreds of other freshman, and we bonded over the experience. I'm still friends with many of them 20 years later. You can bring pictures and a couple of things that remind you of home, cook something that your family always makes, and call your family when you're homesick, and then get out and do something you enjoy in your new setting. I think most people get homesick at times, but it gets easier as you build your new community. Good luck at college -- you've got this, and you're going to do great things!
