I think one of the greatest opportunity is that according to https://www.bls.gov/ooh/architecture-and-engineering/petroleum-engineers.htm the industry is showing slow and steady growth. It can be a tough job and at times in remote areas but the pay is good.
Challenges are the never ending boom or bust cycle for petroleum and headwinds based on environmental concerns as well as alternative energy sources. In addition, the US government may shift it energy focus again after the next election and that could impact exploration and production.
