What was your route to becoming a clinical lab scientist?

What was your route to becoming a clinical lab scientist? I hear you can do directly to a bachelor program or you can get a degree in biology and then find a school or hospital that can help you get your license. I am currently a biology student and I want more information on the route where you do the CLS training after undergrad.

I have a BS in Chemistry and work as a MLS. I do have an AS in MLT from the Army as well but as long as you qualify to test for the ASCP you should be able to work in a clinical lab. You will have to look on ASCP.org under the 'Get Credentialed' tab to see what all classes are required in order to test for the MLT. Classes include Biology, Microbiology and Biochemistry. After obtaining the MLT, you will have to work in a clinical lab for 5 years before testing for the MLS. In my current lab, there are Biology, Genetics and Molecular Biology majors that are working as MLS. MLS is Medical Lab Scientist (4 year degree). MLT is Medical Lab Technician(2 year degree)

I think the route to becoming a technologist and the laws surrounding that vary by state. Ten states require ASCP certification and the quickest route is to go through a bachelor's degree program in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory science. California is one of the ten states that require ASCP certification before working as a clinical laboratory scientist. If you plan to work in California and not move to another state, I recommend switching majors to clinical laboratory science, medical laboratory science, or medical technology.

Hello!

I became a Medical Laboratory Scientist through a 3+1 program. I spent 3 years studying at a university and then completed a 1-year clinical internship at a hospital. Right after finishing, I was able to take my ASCP exam. I've been working in this field for over 25 years now. I hope this helps you on your journey!
