Hello Elizabeth,

It’s a good thing that you are part of the HOSA group in your school, involved in athletics, and also a volunteer in youth sports programs.
However, you must be careful not to allow too many activities to distract you from your academic goals. It is advisable to take them gradually, according to your strength and capacity, so that none of them causes you to suffer a loss, especially in your career.

To your question:
Opportunities for undergraduate research in health sciences include:

1) Academic and laboratory research:
Here, you work in your school laboratory, assisting staff in charge of practical sessions and research activities.
2) Clinical research:
Students can also work as clinical research assistants. This involves helping supervisors by collecting patient data, participating in clinical trials, and supporting related research activities.
3) Public health and data analysis:
Students may assist in public health projects for both government and non-government organizations. For example, during my time, I volunteered in a government public health outreach program for women in my locality. I helped with registration, took vital signs, asked about their reasons for visiting, and directed them on the next steps.
4) There may also be individual research projects led by lecturers or professors in your school. You can approach them and request to participate in their research programs.
5) Additionally, you can inquire within your school’s HOSA group about any ongoing research projects and volunteer to be part of them.

All these opportunities are very helpful in shaping one’s life and in gaining broad, valuable experience.
