Hi Marisol:

One thing that I have always told students is become engaged in what is commonly called "Campus Navigation."

Many colleges have campus tour programs, which provides an initial introduction to the college campus, but I recommend that all students go well beyond the campus tour.

I recommend getting a map of the campus and going for several visit. Visiting various location on campus can help, if you need assistance or feel lost when you arrive.

Many college professors and academic advisors have office hours, which enables current and future students to visit, so they can discuss their future college major or the possible path they should take towards attaining a degree.

Many campuses have college employment offices, which provide information and possible opportunities for employment and future internships.

I also recommend visiting the library, to check out where the best study locations are on the campus.

Checking out the locations of your future classes and becoming well acquainted with campus building can help avoid any issues when you arrive.

Find the buildings which house the various departments, like financial aid, admissions, college security and parking, student life, and campus housing, can also help.

The more knowledge you have of the college campus, and where resources can be found, the less apprehensive and confused you will be when you arrive on the campus to start your college experience.

Michelle’s Answer

Hello, Marisol !

There's really nothing in high school that you can do for Veterinary Science as high schools usually do not offer that subject in high school. Before college, however, there are some things you can do as a high school student that will benefit you in college and once you get to Veterinary School, that is when you will learn how to be a Veterinarian.

Something that you can do now is Volunteer Work around animals. Where you live, you can inquire about doing volunteer work at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center, The Friends of the Burlington County Animal Shelter, the South Jersey Land and Water Trust which may have some opportunities to volunteer for positions related to wildlife habitat preservation, and the Wild Baby Rescue Wildlife Rescue NJ. Your volunteer work will take you around animals but the work would be non-animal roles, group projects, fundraising, and educational outreach programs.

Also connect with the Animal Welfare Association because they offer High School Service Week sessions for local high school students to earn community service hours while learning about shelter operations and making a positive impact on animals.

While in High School, take Biology as many years as you have left in high school. Although it wouldn't be animal biology, there is usually some lab work involved with animals.

When enrolling in college, try to find a college that has an Animal Science Bachelors Program like at Rutgers University–New Brunswick, Centenary University in Hackettstown, (this college offers a strong Equine program), and The New Jersey Institute of Technology is STARTING an Animal Science program so contact them. Also inquire about the Animal Science Program at Delaware Valley University in Pennsylvania. You need to obtain your Bachelors Degree in Animal Science and thereafter, go to Veterinary School.

So, Marisol, during high school take lots of Biology, do volunteer work concerning animals, enroll at college after High School as an Animal Science Major for your Bachelors Degree and then go to Veterinary School to learn how to be a Veterinarian !

I hope this helps as you move forward with your career plans !
