What skills should I start learning during my free time? (as in like sewing, pattern-making, etc.)
I am a sophomore and everyday I enjoy putting together outfits for school. In my avid class, we are discovering what careers interest us and my teacher is supporting my choice in being a fashion designer. While I do know a bit of sewing, I still want to explore skills if I ever do become a fashion designer :)

Hello there! It’s great to know of your interest in fashion design and that you’re already expressing it through putting together outfits. At your stage, your focus should be on building a strong foundation of practical and creative skills that will support your growth over time.
You can start by improving your sewing skills and gradually learning pattern-making, as both are essential for bringing your ideas to life. Developing your sketching and illustration skills will also help you communicate your designs clearly. In addition, learning about fabrics and textiles is important so you understand how different materials behave and how to choose the right ones for your designs.
You can also build skills in styling and color coordination since you already enjoy putting outfits together. Over time, exploring basic digital tools used in fashion design can be helpful as well. Paying attention to trends, studying existing designs, and understanding how garments are constructed will strengthen your overall knowledge.
For now, continue practicing consistently, stay curious, and use your free time to experiment and improve your skills step by step.

Hey Allison, it's great to see your passion for fashion and your drive to build skills as a sophomore. While my background is in engineering, supply chain, and business consulting, not fashion, I can offer some general advice for learning new skills that applies to any field. Besides sewing, consider exploring pattern-making, draping, and fabric selection, which are key areas in fashion design. There are plenty of free tutorials on YouTube to help you get started. Practicing fashion illustration, either by hand or digitally with tools like Procreate or Adobe Illustrator, will also help you build a strong portfolio for future applications. Taking beginner courses on platforms like Skillshare or Coursera in fashion design, textile science, or fashion marketing can be very beneficial. Don't overlook the business side of fashion since skills like branding, social media marketing, and budgeting are valuable. Starting a small project, sharing your process on social media, and building your portfolio early will help you stand out. It's great that your avid teacher is supporting you, so keep experimenting and remember that every new skill is an investment in your future. Best f luck!
