Is it worth it to spend the extra money to go to a well-known school?

I am trying to decide between a prestigious college with a lot of good resources for STEM majors, and a more local college which is much cheaper to go to but still has a very strong program for my major. Is the extra cost worth it for the name recognition and opportunities the prestigious college might offer?

The short answer is that it's likely NOT worth the extra money if the school rankings are close and the cost difference is large. The opposite maybe the case we're talking Top 10 school and small cost delta.

Usually, the value of a Top 10 school is the potential of a higher paying job at a top tier company and the alumni network that can help find jobs down the road. The caveat is that after a few year, your income will likely depend on your actual experience and who you worked for rather then where you graduated from.
