What is the most challenging aspect of 1L year in law school? #Spring25

I am more nervous about the social and practical life aspect than the content. I need some advice on going through law school as a new 1L with little to no previous guidance! Thank you!

You're quite likely to meet other students who are totally new to the environment and if you band together, you'll be able to go through the transitions and navigate new things together just like experts - because there's strength and wisdom in numbers. Seriously, take heart. You and your mates will probably do better than the experienced students who don't have the same good support system. Good luck! You'll do well. Tom

I hope your first year is going well and that you've made some good friends. During my law school years, I learned that forming a study group is really important. If you haven't done this yet, try reaching out to someone in your class. Start with just a few people. In my first year, we had a Foundations of Law class where we worked in small groups. My group became my study group for several classes. By the second semester and in later years, I improved my study group and made friends with grad students and TAs. They all helped me learn more and prepare faster for classes.

A good mentor shortens your learning curve dramatically. Look for someone 5 to 10 years ahead of where you want to be and ask for periodic guidance rather than constant advice. Respect their time and come prepared with specific questions.

Hey Cameran, you are going to do totally fine and the social stuff will fall into place - trust me. Everyone is nervous going into law school and the fact is that you will meet students who are just as nervous as you are and you will form a bond and go through it together.

I was a first generation law student and had absolutely no one in my immediate circle who could relate to me. My 1L year I was a commuter student and thought it would be hard to meet other students who were also commuting because most of the kids were on-campus. I had nothing to worry about - you meet all the kids in your section (in the US, 1Ls are grouped in sections and you go through your core classes together as a section) and you will find kids who are in similar circumstances to you. There is some competition but honestly, once you get into the workload and the grind, all of that falls away and everyone is just trying to do their best and working very hard. Get into a study group with kids who you think you'd like to spend hours with studying dense caselaw. You will spend a ton of time with these students. Be friendly and introduce yourself to the kids sitting around you and just relax. It's a tough time, but the friendships and social aspect were the best parts of law school. You will find your people.

During 1L a lot is thrown at you. Between taking notes in class, studying, making new friends, figuring out your schedule, joining potential clubs.... so much happening very early on, in your first few weeks of classes.
The best way to deal and handle it all, at least from my own perspective, is to have a schedule for yourself as early as possible. Once you figure out how to handle your classes, personal time, studying time, everything will fall into place.
For example, I would study for half of my week's classes on Sundays. Didn't matter if it took me one hour, or the whole day, I would spend my Sundays studying for half of the week classes. That would give me enough time if anything unexpected came up, and that I had to shift some things around.
1L is extremely important, so I would say put it your all in that year. Finishing the year in the top 10%-20% could get you a spot in one of the top law firms in the country, and could set you up for a 2L and maybe official offer to join the firm upon graduation.

1L is stressful and requires a lot out of you, but if you can figure out your schedule early on, you should be able to manage most of it!

Good luck!

Hi Cameron: Chill - you'll be fine! Everyone is scarred the 1st year of law school. Law school is a lot of work and a ton of reading. You'll be too busy to worry about social and practical things. Hint, get into a study group as soon as you can. Meet with them every so often - don't wait until the end of the semester because finals come up fast! Make outlines as you go through each class. Your study group - if they are any good - will be with you all through school. So relax - it all works out fine!
Good luck!

Baljit’s Answer

Transitioning from college to law school is a gentle step up. When I started my first year, I realized I needed a plan that balanced social life, work, and studies. Begin by using an electronic calendar to keep track of all your activities. Some people prefer handwritten calendars, and that's fine too. This will help you get organized. Law school involves a lot of reading and analyzing, so staying updated on current events will be useful in tutorials and discussions.
