Is journalism a good career to get into?
I love writing and journalism. I was wondering if this would be a good job to get into. With the rise of AI, the job could slowly be taken over, and I am not sure if I could make the money I would like to.

What kind of writing do you enjoy? Or which part of journalism do you think you will enjoy? What type of topics do you enjoy writing about? I think perhaps if you intern at your local newspaper, you will understand if you enjoy the daily news churn. You can also consider a career in Public Relations - basically these are the people who work with brands and seed stories to journalists about these brands.

Hi Aiden,
If you love writing, journalism can still be a great career choice. It's changing fast with AI, but this brings new opportunities. While AI handles some routine tasks, human journalists are needed for creativity, analysis, and trust. Jobs are shifting, focusing more on storytelling, verification, and multimedia skills.
Why Journalism Can Be a Good Career:
AI is a tool, not a replacement. It helps with quick reports, but people are essential for investigative work, interviews, and nuanced stories.
Creativity and judgment are important. AI struggles with emotions, ethics, and originality, which are strengths of human writers.
Trust matters. With misinformation on the rise, audiences look for transparency and human oversight.
How AI Is Changing Journalism:
1. AI assists with tasks like transcription and summaries.
2. New roles are emerging in data journalism, multimedia storytelling, and AI-augmented reporting.
3. Hybrid roles let journalists guide AI tools while maintaining editorial judgment.
4. Entry-level roles may decrease, but skills in investigative reporting and multimedia production are in high demand.
Career Outlook:
Income varies. Local reporters might earn modestly, but investigative journalists, editors, and multimedia specialists can earn well.
Digital platforms are expanding, offering new revenue streams.
Freelancers might feel pressure, but strong personal branding and specialization can help.
Skills You will need:
1. Strong writing and storytelling.
2. Data literacy and digital fluency.
3. Multimedia skills (video, audio, social media).
4. Adaptability to keep up with technology and audience trends.
Key Takeaway: If you love writing and journalism, don't let AI discourage you. Use it to handle repetitive tasks while you focus on creativity, analysis, and connecting with readers. Journalism is evolving, but those who embrace digital and storytelling skills can still have fulfilled, well-paid careers.
My Personal Advice: Start now by writing regularly, trying out multimedia formats like blogs, podcasts, or videos, and learning basic data analysis. This will give you a head start in the future of journalism. Wishing you all the very best in your future endeavors.

If a high salary is important to you, journalism may not be the right field; jobs have always been lower-paying, and there's a lot of turnover and frequent layoffs in media these days. However, there are lots of adjacent professions that can offer more stability, including public relations, communications, and content marketing. All of these allow you to research and learn about new topics and tell stories, but you can hold positions in these areas at any number of organizations across the public and private sector.
