Brian’s Answer

A sales rep can be any major. Hiring managers are looking for candidates that are hard-working, competitive, and personable. Interning or working in retail sales and hospitality are great ways to get experience. Majors in business, marketing or communications work well. Having a passion for medicine/pharmaceuticals is important. Majoring or minoring in a related field may help but is not necessary.

Lillian’s Answer

A combination of natural science + business would be best. Depending on whether you like the science aspect more or the business aspect more, you would choose majors/minors like biology, chemistry, biochemistry, public health, healthcare, business, marketing, and other similar fields.

More importantly, make sure you get the right kind of experience through internships, jobs, undergraduate research, or other means. Work experience in sales, customer service, or pharmaceuticals is going to be key.

Susan’s Answer

I became a technology sales person with a major in Marketing and a minor in Computer Science. This was a great combination for me enjoying a successful career in technology. It is good to have a sound business background so I believe many business majors would be good to consider. If you know the industry you want to pursue, you may think about a minor to assist with a specific target for that industry, but this is not mandatory.

Erin’s Answer

I would look at a business management major with a health science minor or double major.

Science, Business, Communications, Marketing ... are all great avenues to sales! (Science backgrounds are not required) Pharmaceutical companies are looking for strong work ethic, great organizational and communication skills, teamwork, leadership, performance! Typically you are working a territory on your own, or possibly overlapping with a few colleagues. To be driven/self-motivated are keys to success in this industry!
