Hadley’s Answer

I currently work in a HR Operations related role, however, throughout my professional career I held various roles (call center representative, recruiter, account manager, etc...) The one common factor in all of those different roles was the customer service aspect. I say this because I feel it is great to learn early on how to interact and treat your colleagues and/or clients. It is almost like the golden rule where you treat others as you wanted to be treated. I found that by providing excellent customer service in order to assist with whatever the task at hand was, it helped build my brand into being someone who can be counted on to do a great job. In addition I was able to build excellent relationships along the way that helped me when it came time to transition to a new role as my network was strong and believed in the service I could provide. I like that I have done many different roles because without them I wouldn't have ended up in the HR Operations role I am in today. If you are someone who believes in providing excellent service and enjoy interaction with people, I highly recommend HR related field. It has been such a great ride so far and I look forward to what lies ahead!

Indira’s Answer

I studied Economics in Undergrad and then got my MBA in Finance. While I started my career in Finance, pretty soon I moved into Marketing and Product Management as I felt I was more interested in solving customer problems by developing new products and capabilities and help market them. I am in Telecommunications and my focus has been on serving other businesses of all sizes. My academic background gave me the knowledge and flexibility to change paths based on how my interests were developing. In college, I was not really sure what type of career would be the right fit but being curious and having the hunger to learn helped me navigate my way. Wish you the best!

Indira recommends the following next steps:

If you have the opportunity, look for job shadows or internships that will help you know where your interests might lie (or even, what you do NOT want to do).
Reach out and speak to people from different backgrounds to gain insights on their fields, what they like or dislike about their jobs.

I decided to major in Political Science and English. I currently wok in the telecommunications field as a Customer Service Coordinator where I use my English degree for both written and verbal communication on a daily basis.
