Jason’s Answer

Hospitals, and hospital systems typically have two major functions. There is the medical side of the hospital which will normally require additional training and certifications and the business side of the hospital.

On the business side you can expect similar types of tech careers and departments to all major companies, Security, Programming and development, Data warehousing, End User Support, etc.

A great way to find out is to look at openings at hospitals in the area and see where they are staffing. This will give you some ideas of questions to ask in an interview if you are looking to start a career or internship at one of them!

Jason recommends the following next steps:

Research job openings at local hospitals

Stone’s Answer

You could be the person who manages the various tech used on patients, such as an X-Ray Technician. You could also be the person who repairs the machinery that the doctors use; as we continue to move into a technical future, there will be more and more technology that will need fixing.

Malia’s Answer

Hospitals have a big responsibility to their patients. They often have to save their lives but also make the patient experience easy and protect their identities. Often times the tech teams at hospitals are working to make software available to patients to allow them to move through the process more seamlessly. This will usually require some kind of login on behalf of the patient, this login could link all their test results, identifying info (SSN, phone, DOB etc), health history as well as treatments. Businesses have to protect this information and the tech teams will usually engage specific Identity and Access Management software to manage this.
