Do welders usually have to travel?

I travel a lot now as a consultant for a welding quality engineering company. But when I was a welder, I only worked in fabrication shops and so never was required to travel. You can travel as much as you want if you want to do pipeline welding or work for construction companies that have projects around the country. But if you want to stay local, there are plenty of structural steel fabrication companies around that would keep you busy, well paid and at home.

A welder will typically travel a lot as you have to go from job site to job site. It will depend on if you are a contract worker (wherein you could stay more local) or employed staff of a welding company (where you will go to where the business has contracted a building project). It also depends on what type of projects you will be working on. A welder at a body shop will stay local, whereas a welder on building projects will travel to where the buildings are being put up.
