To keep it very simple, basketball scouts are " looking " at many actions that you display on a court. Yes, they look at overall athleticism and room to grow/ develop . As coaches say, " he/ she has a. Lot of upswing" , which means the tools are there and with the right coaching , commitment, work ethic and attitude - the sky is the limit.
They also look at how you " adapt " in situations as in - do handle pressure well, can you adjust when the game is on the line and going into another gear is necessary. Also, depending on your position , can you post up low and also challenge/ take it to a guard - versatility.
Yes, if you attend a showcase in which you play games most of the day and are thrown into the " fire" with a mix of players - they wa t to " see" ypur IQ of the game with no structure, no set plays. This is straight up basketball knowledge live- can you play with anyone and figure it out , adjust and still get others to notice your assets. Whether it be hustle, smarts, scoring, driving to the hoop, defense, steals, pressure , rebounding , leading in order to win - can you demonstrate that with a mix of players just put together on the spot??
Lastly, they look at your behavior and body language with referees, teammates and coaches constantly. So, if you think they are not looking at you when you get subbed out and sent to the bench- you are wrong.
Good luck , college basketball is a great experience!

First, I focus on skill level. watch to see where a player’s skill set is in proportion to other athletes the same age. also look for athleticism. By athleticism, not only mean their physical size but also what they are able to accomplish with that size. Athleticism should be speed, quickness, strength, as well as potential. Another key factor is basketball IQ--I want to know if they really understand the game.
