Hi Lauren,
How exciting that you wish to be a nurse specializing in labor and delivery. Your first step is to work hard in your science classes in high school then apply to a university that offers an RN program. I suggest getting a four year degree, only because you may wish to go back and get your Nurse Practitioner or Nurse Midwife license later. There are two-year and four-year programs, if you are serious a four year program is best.
Then, select your first position as an RN in a labor/delivey unit or if you are in a rural area a hospital that allows you to work in OB. You will 'train on the job' after you graduate and take boards to get licensed. I never realized I liked labor/delivery until I took a position in a the L & D because they needed someone to work 12-hour shifts, not because I wanted L&D, then stayed because I loved it. Keep an open mind and stay curious, concentrate on one step at a time, and pivot as your life changes. Nursing is a job that never gets stale!
