Personally, with the continued explosion of the nationwide opioid epidemic, I feel strongly that anyone who wants to volunteer in the criminal justice system should make sure that they have a solid background in alcohol and addiction recovery services. I have spent the last 20 years defending those accused of criminal behavior in the courts of Massachusetts. As time passes, I find that more and more of my clients have criminal behavior caused by their alcohol or substance addiction. Don’t get me wrong, there are still far too many people in our society who act with felonious intent. However the majority whom I have defended find themselves behind bars because of alcohol and/or drug use. Again, now everyone who uses alcohol or other substances is an alcoholic or an addict. Being able to perceive the difference and reaching across the line to offer help hope or assistance to those afflicted with this disease is just one small way for anyone to help, no matter which side of the line you are on,
