Hi Franda,

I love being a nurse! I work in a hospital and take care of all kinds of patients. I love meeting new people and knowing that I'm helping them. It can be hard though. We are frequently short staffed and end up taking care of extra patients. There's also a lot of computer charting, phone calls and heavy lifting.

What's really nice about being a nurse are the opportunities that are out there. You can work 12 hour shifts or 8 hour shifts, in a hospital or doctors office, become an administrator or a nurse practitioner. Lots and lots of options. I was especially grateful that I was easily able to reduce my hours at work when I had children. That was really important to me. Nursing gives you lots of options.

Hello Franda,

If you want a rewarding career with flexibility and many options, nursing is a perfect career choice!

First, there are a large variety of settings you can work in, for example: hospitals, health departments, schools, nursing homes, insurance companies, prisons, pharmaceutical companies, and clinics. The setting possibilities are endless. Secondly, depending on the setting, you may have different shifts and hours (8 hours, 12 hours, day, evening or night), and you can work either full time, part time or PRN (as needed). This can change throughout your career based on your circumstances.

I have worked in a variety of settings such as a hospital, nursing home, medical clinic and insurance company. Each setting has it's own rewards and stressors.

Best of luck,

Lisa
