Karolyn’s Answer

According to my sources, Music Therapy requires a bachelor's degree in music therapy and require completion of courses in the areas of both music and therapy. You can check your local college for information.

Loyd’s Answer

I am not a music therapist first of all. I am an engineer but also a musician. My wife is a therapist and my best friend was going to school to be a MT. First of all in either of these professions, you may never be able to make enough money to pay off your student loans. So do you have another way to pay for college, ie a spouse, parents, or scholarships? That being said, therapy through the arts is essentially needed. Mental health is the single most important resource one can have. Any music offers a form of healing, creativity, and engagement like no other. If you are truly passionate you will do well but it's a tough way to make money for many therapists. You may have to be willing to take on a second or third job to make ends meet for awhile though.
