BAKER,’s Answer

My son wanted to be an auto mechanic. When he was 16 he got an internship at a local car repair garage, no gas sales. When he obtained his license he drove the cars in and out of the repair bays. He learned how to fix flats, change oil and do other minor repairs. He learned how to deal with customers, both the satisfied and dissatisfied kind. He also had an opportunity to watch and help with some major repairs such as engine and transmission work and replacements. By working on the weekend and sometimes after school he learned what mechanics do and what training is required. He is still working in the car repair industry now at major dealerships.
Working as an intern will help you answer your question of what it would be like especially if you get to experience working in all seasons of the year. Find a small shop and ask the owner if you could intern. You may start sweeping floors and going in the back to get parts. Eventually you will get to help the mechanics and understand how a repair garage works. When you are older try moving to a dealership as a porter or parts person. Dealerships have an entirely different dynamic, there is a brand image to uphold, there is pressure to sell cars, pressure to fix them fast and to up sell additional services. The two different worlds of small repair shop and a dealership will help you decide where you want to be and where you don't.

Ravindra’s Answer

To become an auto body technician or auto body repair tech, you need a high school diploma or GED certificate. Though some jobs require an associate degree in automotive technology, most auto body technician jobs only require a vocational school certificate.
