Hi Alla,

I am a student doctor, and plan to specialize in pediatrics. Awesome that you are considering it as a career! Most of my jobs and internships leading up to med school have been working with kids (not necessarily medical stuff).

I coached kids soccer camps, up to 50 kids! That really stood out of my resume plus help me build skills working with kids in teams. It taught me how to include all kids,

I volunteered at elementary school events, I tutored kids in math and science. I worked as a behavioral technician helping kids with autism do everyday things such as communication skills, playing with peers, personal hygiene (wash hands and correct way to use a public restroom), and doing homework.

In college I researched and wrote about potential development of autism in kids whose mothers were exposed to pesticide use during pregnancy.

Now in med school, I work on a pediatric rotation and I love it!! Helping kids with their annual physicals and just building fun relationships with the family is the best part. Working with kids is a blast, and keeping an open and imaginative mind are great qualities to have as a pediatrician :)

I know this post is a bit late, but if you are still considering this career and have more questions, please let me know.

I have a 2 yo son and am a single mom. As such I look for guidance and support from my pediatrician beyond just medical. At our regular check ups I check in on what I should expect in terms of behavioral development. My son has been displaying the unfavorable yet typical 2 yo behaviors lately where he shows his frustration by getting physical with his friends at school. My pediatrician spent quite a bit of time with me on the phone talking to me about what I can expect of him and how I should handle it. She made me feel better that I am just dealing with a regular boy.

I wish you the best in pursuing this career. I love my pediatrician and it seems like a fun job if you love kids :)
