It depends on its complexity and how refined you want it to be. My brother created a simple game in a couple of weeks; on the other hand, game companies take a couple of years to release a game and sometimes more. That with a team of game designers working on it.

The video games that the masses play are usually created by gaming studios that operate under large companies. These are created by teams of people and worked on for many months/years. It is good to aspire to be part of their teams, which not only include the game designing, but also marketing, sales, finance, etc.
