Would you recommend getting an internship during college?

I want to go into medicine and have heard its good for future jobs and possibly med school to get internships. Would you recommend getting one during the year or over summer? Or both? #medicine #pre-med

That's a tricky question because I'm not sure what types of internships actually exist for medicine right now. I know that the fields of engineering have lots of internships available, but not sure that medicine does. I know that shadowing is necessary for medical school application, so that is where I would focus. If you get a summer job, make sure that it is associated with health care. For example, my son taught swim lessons to disabled children during his college years. This combined his lifeguard skills with a valuable volunteering experience.

Gabriel’s Answer

Hi Erica,

Thanks for the question. Yes, I wholeheartedly recommend doing any internships or volunteer opportunities that are of particular interest to you and/or the career you eventually pursue. Not only will they give you "real word" experience which will not only allow you to establish a track record of performance, but will allow you to network and meet other people. You may end up being able to rely on one of them as a reference for graduate/medical school or an employer.

Also, I think it matters less when you do it and more that you simply do it. So doing it during the year or over the summer doesn't really matter provided, of course, that they won't interfere with school and your other responsibilities.

Here's a great article that I encourage you to read concerning what you should be doing if you have medical school aspirations: http://college.usatoday.com/2014/04/07/5-ways-pre-med-students-can-spend-the-summer/
