How exactly does one become a theatre director?

I want a career in theatre. I've even considered being a drama teacher. I'm curious about directing though. I think I could be good at it if it what I decided to go with. #the-arts

Like most competitive careers, start small and get some experience--no matter how minor. Ask to be a Director's apprentice or assistant. You might even have to work unpaid to get experience. Your compensation will be gaining experience and perhaps getting a reference from the Director. Check with local schools or theater companies for opportunities to get involved with their productions. Theater happens at all levels. Good luck!
