Good question, having a professional career in sports I have known many professionals in the sports therapy industry where they help professionals prior to or after games, here are some of the specific quotes from "https://priclinic.com/difference-relaxation-medical-sports-massage/"

Relaxation massage can fall under either Western or Eastern styles or techniques. Often there is a blending of the two. Most of the massage techniques used at spas, resorts, cruise ships, and practitioners, either working alone or for larger companies, use relaxation type. Whether the practitioner is using long, gliding strokes, kneading strokes, or even stretches and pressure points, the goal is for reduction of stress and an increase in relaxation. These sessions can be anywhere from a half-hour to two hours in length, with the most popular being about an hour. This type of massage promotes relaxation, relieves stress, and induces a state of well-being

Sports massage can overlap with medical-massage. The massage therapist is often dealing with anyone from professional athletes to weekend warriors. Techniques include those needed for warm-up, cool-down, and rehabilitation after injury. Most of the techniques used come from the Western massage branch of bodywork and may include some methods similar to those used in physical therapy. These sessions also may be as short as 15 minutes.

Desmond’s Answer

Hello Jessica! i realize this is an older question i have found, and you have heard many answers by now. but to summarize, a relaxation massage falls within the real of a traditional swedish massage with goals of calming the nervous system and putting the client in a state of relaxation or balance. Sports massage typically involves preparing the individual/ athlete for their sport or event which may require techniques designed to lubricate joints, excite/ stimulate the nervous system and increase blood flow. In addition, sports massage does also include post event cool down and recovery from event treatment as well. I hope this information has found you well!

Carolyn’s Answer

A relaxation massage is typically a full body massage, pressure is light to moderate and not specific to the muscles. The goal is to provide an overall nurturing, relaxing massage and can get rather boring for someone like me that specializes in Neuromuscular Massage Therapy. Sports massage is very specific to the clients needs, issues and sport. It is very focused on the muscles involved and depends on whether it is for an event, pre or post on what needs to be done. It can be very beneficial if you have a sport you love and want to acquire a job with a team and get to work with all of the players, as well as go to games etc.

Patty’s Answer

Jessica,

The names pretty much say it all. Relaxation massage is performed with the goal of relaxation in mind. Whereas a sports massage is more invigorating and specific to a certain body part or exercise. Both are very beneficial yet very different.

I hope this helps.

All the Best,

Patty Born, BSN, RN, LMT
