I would contact your local Union office and ask about their training and apprentice programs.

Without experience, you'd likely need to do an official apprenticeship, join the union https://www.carpenters.org/training_centers/nj/. and get a contractor https://www.nj.gov/dobi/banklicensing/homerepaircont.html license.

If you want to be a Carpenter i would suggest reaching out to family and friends and see if they know a good carpenter in your area. Thats how I started. My sisters best friend from High School hired me and basically started me at the bottom of the ladder. I was ambitious and eager to learn and picked it up pretty quick. After just about 2 years one of my coworkers joined the Union as an apprentice. It was not the job path for me as I wanted to move to more of a project management role. My friend is still a union carpenter and has enjoyed his long career. I wish you the best of luck. Its very rewarding to see something that you actually built you will enjoy it.
