Amy’s Answer

I am a freelance writer and work from home. I created my own business after retiring from 29 years in education. I've always loved to write, mostly short stories for my students. My friend in Houston is a real estate broker. While I was visiting she asked me if I'd ever written for real estate agents. She gave me a few homes to describe and my new career took off.

What makes me interested in my job is that I'm able to make money doing what I love...writing! I enjoy writing for specific purposes rather than writing just anything. I love revising and editing as well. I'm the type of person that cringes when I see an error in a book or on a sign. When I see someone who I believe could benefit from my services as a writer, I take action. I reach out and introduce myself. I offer a flyer of the services I can provide. I also prefer many short projects as opposed to one, long, continuous writing job. That's why writing descriptions for realtors is a good match for my skillset and interests.

The biggest part of the job that I love is working from home and making my own schedule. I keep a calendar of what I need to do and set due dates for myself. Then I get up each morning, get ready, and go to my "office" which is the guest room I set up with a desk. I work as long as I need to work each day.

Amy recommends the following next steps:

Know your interests and strengths. If you are interested in something, follow up with research and maybe some classes to develop the skills you need.
Volunteer to help someone in the area of your interest. Not only will it give you good experience, you may get some leads and possible job opportunities.

Marc A.’s Answer

Ms Tingle, thanks for a great question from the students at ICS.

I work for a technology and communications company called Verizon, which is in the communications & telephone industry. The best part about my job is that I am working with cool products -- like electric cars and motorcycle helmets that can talk to the motorcycle and drones that can plant trees in the forest, or totally put out a fire in a 20-story building...or even help a firefighter to see where he's going in a burning building. These products are all made by really smart people who start these companies that sell the products and they need their products to connect over the internet so they can see and talk to their products and know where they are at all times -- this is called machine-to-machine communications...which is like phone conversations for machines without needing people to help.

I have worked in the technology industry for almost 30 years. One of my jobs was with a company that made these really cool walkie talkies for business people -- they called it push-to-talk and it was made by a company called Nextel. They sold millions of these phones to moms & dads, students & teachers and even to police, fire fighters, emergency doctors and paramedics -- it was a very useful product.

The reason that I like my job so much is that the technology, the products and the people are always changing and new, so I get introduced to lots of new products and people everyday that I can work with to help them build the next video game or automated, talking robot. Maybe one day they're be a product that would allow our refrigerators to talk to us and let us know when we're out of milk or fruit...which is really cool too.

I have also been an entrepreneur -- which means that I've started a company of my own which was also in the technology industry and my job was as a consultant...which means that I would work with people who were making new products and services that used technology and they would hire me to help them choose which technology or services would be the coolest to use that they could buy at the best price which would help them to make more money for each product that they would sell -- it was fun to be part of other companies as someone they trust to help them grow.

Hoping this was helpful for your student Ms. Tingle. Thank you for all you do in educating and preparing our youth for what will be their tomorrow (and ours).

Hi! I'm a software engineer, which means I generally spend my day coding different features of programs for the company I work for. A big motivator for me is the amazing people I get to work with every day! They are all very kind and wonderful to work with, so even when we are stuck on something, we can joke and talk it out together.

Another motivator is that because of how fast technology moves, I get to constantly continue to learn new programming languages and other methods.

Jorge’s Answer

Hi, my motivation for enjoying my work is to always seek how I can improve the processes we have and help my Team on their performance and development, I am a Team Lead of young people that are starting their professional career, so helping and guide them is one of the main activities that makes me feel so good. All days there is a new problem that needs a solution; therefore, I am never bored.

When you are seeking a job, you should think about the activities and challenges that you will face, will fulfill your expectations. In my opinion, the most important characteristic of a job, is how it makes you feel, of course you need to seek an activity that will provide the economic resources to satisfy your needs, but is more important if it contribute with your self-realization and your dreams.
I don't want to sound like a cliché, but I love the following quote from Mark Twain: "Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life."

I currently work at a mission-driven chocolate company, where we are committed to environmental and social sustainability. Besides the perks of free chocolate, I love that my everyday job (leading new product innovation, sales strategy, and data insights) goes toward helping a greater cause. I get to use my strengths - critical and analytical thinking, organization, leadership, and communication - to come up with new products, and it is very satisfying to see the products on grocery shelves at the end of it. I enjoy working in a team and getting everyone collaborating and working toward an end goal, so this job helps me realize that. Ultimately, it all goes toward supporting our sustainability work as well, so I get to fulfill my sustainability passions and professional ambitions.

Garcia’s Answer

There is so much to be interested in with my job right now... first off being able to work during this pandemic has been a gift and it has not been easy. I work in California and we have not been able to reopen our theme parks... while that is truly difficult, our team has been working hard to bring back safely Disney magic as only we can. I directly support Food & Beverage operations and honestly, this industry has truly taken a hit and our team continues to look at how we can REALIZE the magnitude of challenges that we continue to face- remembering our essential workers as they have the heaviest burden. What can we as visionaries can do, especially to navigate our future thru this fog. Deep breaths and finding meaning in our day and our work to create the momentum for our tomorrow. To VISUALIZE what our beloved theme parks will look like after this pandemic- say a day in 2022... the families enjoying thier day, walking down Main St. USA creating magical moments again... I find strength today, because i see the future day at Disneyland and i can hear the laughter, see the smiles, and smell the fresh popcorn popping... it makes our planning all worth that moment. and lastly, ACTUALIZE- our team is responsible to devise the strategic plans in partnership with our operators to reopen safely and responsibly our locations, this allows us to prepare to be present and open to the change we want to see and be that change for our Guests. I work with some of the most amazing and talented people and truly that is what makes getting up and showing up, even if that is virtually predominantly, as i trust them, i value them and we together will return, stronger and better.

Audrietta’s Answer

What makes me interested in my job right now is helping people in my company find ways to be more inclusive. I work in Diversity, Equity & Inclusion which is a part of Human Resources. We have more actively been addressing society's racial injustice issues internally ever since the George Floyd murder, although we had always valued D&I and had various programs. So I facilitate Conscious Inclusion training with our employees and also manage various diversity groups of employees for career development, community outreach, customer insight and cultural awareness, all leading to help our company better compete for great talent and find business solutions that meet customers where they are. Having a DE&I lens helps us in all of these areas and I help our teams to fine tune that lens.

Gloria’s Answer

Hi,

I am excited to be able to answer this question. I am an Instructional Designer. So what is it? I develop training programs that other people teach in person or take via web-based training. I work for a large company, rather than schools. We train people who do jobs for my company. It can be pretty challenging to figure out the right way to train people. I get to find creative solutions to training people.

And I create a lot of different elements for training. I use some software to create web-based training called Adobe Captivate. I get to write all of the training, which is my favorite thing to do, writing. I get to take photos and edit photos with Adobe Photoshop. I also get to write, film, and star in videos that we use to train people on their jobs. So I get to be a writer, photographer, and actor with the job that I do.

Terri’s Answer

I have a chance to help people every day. I am an insurance manager and I am able to help members of my team learn and grow every day. I also work with our customers daily and that gives me an opportunity to share knowledge about what's happening in insurance. The pandemic has had a big impact on my customers (nursing homes) and has given me the opportunity to continue learning. So, to have a job where I can help others, continue to learn, while having fun is what keeps me going to work every day. It's not always easy, but it's rewarding and it brings me joy.
