Before you can become a marketing strategist, you must first become a marketing practitioner.

There are MANY types of marketing out there, and so you need to determine if you want to specialize in one type of marketing, like Social marketing, advertising, digital marketing, events, etc., and become an expert in Marketing to support executives, where you will require a broader knowledge base.

One of the straightest paths to becoming a strategic marketer is to begin your path at an agency. This will give you lots of diverse experience.
By the time you finish high school and college, the marketing discipline will expand, as will the skillsets and technologies available.

In terms of course work, the biggest gap in Marketing right now is in analytics. The best marketing teams make data-driven decisions, and most don't know how to do it well. Take math, statistics, database courses, and strategic thinking courses. Also, you want to take public speaking (a huge part of strategy is being able to share it eloquently) as well as writing classes. Lastly, if you are offered technology courses like web development, application courses, etc., you should work on those.
