Karina’s Answer

Surprisingly enough, through the public school districts. Most school districts in the Southeast/Mid-Michigan area offer free training, as long as you work with them for so long after getting your Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Once you are trained and certified the first time, you often have to do a less-strenuous "recertification". Once you have a CDL, you're a more attractive candidate in the transportation field. If you aren't hired by a public school district, you can always find somewhere to take CDL classes, such as a college or private "school".

Scott’s Answer

My path into the transportation field was two pronged. In one part, I have been around it for some time. After high school I took a job in a warehouse to save money for college and ended up as a local route box truck driver for the same company shortly after. During college I drove a building supply flatbed truck in the summers, also to save money for college.

Shortly after college I took a job in private investigations and because of my familiarity with the transportation industry I was asked to conduct some investigations that were related. I ended up doing well with it and then in my early years here at my current employer was asked to utilize that skill set and knowledge. All in all I did cargo investigations and supply chain security as part of my job for over 25yrs before stepping into my current transportation related position here.

Driving is a great field and great work with so many benefits to it and I enjoyed my time as a driver. For me, it was my time driving that got me so interested in Transportation. It also exposed me to dispatching, fulfillment, warehousing, intake, and many other areas in transportation. Transportation offers many fields and many different career paths, some you may never have thought were there without exploring further.

Brandon’s Answer

Hi Nate,
I got started by attending a CDL driving school. They taught me how to drive and park trucks and trailers and many of the road laws across the US. Once I had my CDL, I applied to a trucking company and got hired very quickly. That company then gave me more training before I was out and actually working. I drove across the country for two years and now drive in my hometown. It was a great experience for me and I would recommend talking to a driving school to learn about what opportunities are available near you once you can.
