Generally speaking, a degree in music/ music performance works best - it keeps many doors open. If you want to teach in a school setting, you'll need to go to teacher's college as well. Some conservatory's will allow you to teach with just your grade 8 in your desired instrument or your grade 2 theory, but that's not as stable an option. Taking courses specifically in conducting would be a GREAT help, and would look awesome on a resume - if your college doesn't offer that, try to volunteer with local music programs that need a conductor. Any and all music experience is a plus - if you currently teach privately, keep doing that! If you haven't started, I encourage you to try it! It's a great side gig and it would help during the hiring process later on.
