I am looking to pursue software engineering at SJSU

Title is the background.

What do you think of this school, I'd perfer Cal Poly, but my grades and scores are too low in my opinion.

I also got into U of A is that better than SJSU #computer-software #software-engineering

Gaurav’s Answer

A lot depends on the progress and subjects picked up to challenge yourself. Being in the Silicon Valley SJSU could be easy to score a job but having said that U of A has wider network.

Pick up the most relevant subject to the job market and that should help.

What feels like a good fit for you as a person? Which school do you feel you may fit in better or more aligned with the culture of the student body ? There may be academic interests but college time is full of many experiences all equally important to shaping you as person and in your career. Get involved in clubs activities etc. This will set you up with experiences for your career. Work hard at either and you will have background to succeed after you have graduated.

bridget’s Answer

Hi Jack:

Some points to consider:

University of Arizona generally ranks higher than SJSU; SJSU is not a research-oriented institution; so they don't attract the best research professors. SJSU is industry oriented.

SJSU puts you closer to companies in Silicon Valley -- I think you would be in a better position for Internship opportunities when compared to AZ.

I guess part of your decision might hinge on your goals once you complete your undergraduate degree! Industry or Academia? :)

Kind regards,

Bridget

Thank you comment icon I absolutely agree with Bridget ! SJSU provides better exposure to industries compare to University of Arizona. So, if you are looking for a job after under-graduation, you should probably go with a college which has a better access to companies. Any tech city(Chicago,NYC,etc) for that matter will be a good call to go for undergrad. But if you are looking for academia post undergrad, you should chose a research-oriented college as University of Arizona. In addition to that, financially, in terms of fees, it will be beneficial to go with SJSU if you are a resident of California. Prerna Jha

Ed’s Answer

I can't really comment on the relative merits of SJSU vs U of A, but I can say this. The company I work for, Okta, just offered two internships to SJSU students. The field was very competitive, and if they got offers, it was because they were very good.

Make of it what you will. Ultimately you are the primary driver of you education.
