How would I adjust my experience section when transferring retail to computer science?

I have always wanted to have a career CompSci, and am currently in college and working at a grocery store. I know that jobs like applicants to have experience and while retail isn't exactly the same there are still soft skills there and I want to know how I would present that to an employer.

How competitive is the software engineering field? Will a regular bachelor's degree in computer science GUARANTEE a spot in IT? As a resident in Maryland, does being a software engineer require you to live in a urban/city area? Are their any software engineers that are successful that live in more suburban to rural areas? (I'd like to live in a suburban area)

I am a 15 year old high school student in the state of Maryland, and I have a slight interest in the field of IT (specifically software engineering). Time is running short so I'd like to ask some questions about the field.

What other responsibilities are involved for a software developer, apart from the technological responsibilities and skills, when (for example) working for a company? What are the skills required for these responsibilities (social/communication skills, teamwork skills, work ethic, etc.)?

I am a 10th grader in a dual enrollment program for IT. I am interested in becoming a software developer in the future. I am rather decent at using technology, and I learn more everyday. However, I am rather lacking in other skills. I am a large introvert and typically don't talk to people I don't already know, I find teamwok more difficult than working alone, and I admittedly could have a better work ethic. I tend to procrastinate a lot. Despite these setbacks, I am ready and willing to learn and get better at these skills to better do the thing I am passionate about. I would find it helpful to get some advice from experienced professionals on the topic.

How can I gain the skills and mentorship needed to start an AutoCAD/SolidWorks training institute in my home country (Africa) Cameroon?

Dear CareerVillage community, I want to start a training center that teaches AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and other 2D/3D CAD design software because there is a growing need for these skills in my home country My challenge is that I currently lack advanced CAD skills, and I also don’t have a mentor who can guide me in learning these programs or in setting up the training institute professionally. My questions are: 1. What is the best way for someone in my situation to gain strong skills in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and other CAD tools from scratch? 2. Are there affordable or free training resources that can help me reach an instructor-level proficiency? 3. How can I find a mentor or an experienced CAD professional (maybe here on CareerVillage) who can guide me on both the technical and business steps to launch this training institute? 4. What practical steps should I take to make this vision realistic in Cameroon? Any advice, learning path, or mentorship would mean a lot. Thank you!

When looking for internships, how can I stand out from other applicants with skills that may be the bare minimum?

I am studying Computer Application Development at a trade school. I often view postings for open positions that are way out of my skillset. I am worried I have not accomplished enough despite working constantly. I would like my next job to be in industry, but am struggling to find open positions as well.

Is my app idea worth it/needed?

I am considering building an "all-in-one life app" that has multiple different features and is basically a collection of different apps combined into one, and it's very collaborative, interactive, and connects with different apps. Kind of like Notion. I was wondering if this kind of app is really needed or original. Be honest.

How do you approach debugging or troubleshooting issues in a large codebase?

I feel that there are a lot of debugging when it comes to coding, my experience in middle school/high school main concerns were about how to try and fix the code, but obviously its just a small portions, so how do actual engineers debug code while dealing with a database of codes and programs.

What can I do for new life in Houston texas?

I recently moved to Houston, Texas, and I am looking for a job. I applied to many places, such as IKEA, Walmart, Target, Macy's, and other stores, but I was not approved. My major is computer engineering and I studied in Iran. I am a hardworking, creative, and creative girl, and I have other skills, and I learn everything very quickly. I have experience in network plus, website design, digital marketing, robotics, and many computer fields, and even fine arts, Photoshop, and photography in Iran. But in America, with this work experience, I was not given a specialized job. I understand that a degree from America is necessary. I also worked at Amazon in the warehouse. Also, since I recently came to Texas, I need guidance for work and life. I also need academic counseling because I would like to study paramedical and dentistry in Texas. I would appreciate it if anyone has any ideas or can give me some guidance, please message me because I really need work and progress.

How to prepare for the technical interview for software engineer roles?

I'm a rising third-year college student majoring in computer science and consider a possible career in software development. As I plan to apply for next summer's internship, I would appreciate any advice on how to get started on preparing for the technical interview. I've heard that LeetCode is helpful, but as there are so many problems on the website, how do I know what problems to focus on? Are there any extra tips on the order or quantity of practicing LeetCode problems? How exactly should I take advantage of LeetCode to practice? Also, would appreciate if anyone has taken CodePath's technical interview class and share how helpful it is (or what aspect of it is most helpful). Thank you so much!

What do employers look for in hiring software engineers?

I'm a rising third-year college student majoring in computer science and consider a possible career in software development. But I also heard that this pathway is very competitive, and thousands of applicants compete for limited amount of positions. I wonder in this case, what employers would look for and how they distinguish between so many applicants. I know that technical projects on resumes, OAs, interviews are all important, but wonder which part an applicant should focus the most on? How important are cover letters? What makes one applicant hired and another not hired? I guess this question applies to both internship and full-time jobs. Thanks! :)

I'm confused, as a running start student completing their AA in Arts but wanting to be a Software Engineer, and now noticing that there is an AA for CS, I don't know what is the best plan for me?

Hello, my name is Daniel, I do running start as a junior and am completing my AA arts this upcoming year. I want to be a Software Engineer in my future but now I'm worried if I'm perusing the right degree, there is a CS-AA in the college I attend and a friend of mine is trying to persue it, so that when she finishes it, she can get a beginner job (like analyst) and going into internships - which does not seem like a bad plan to me. I'm doing my AA in arts degree and almost done but if I want to get into CS-AA then I might not have enough time to be able to complete it before I graduate high school. I contacted the University of Washington which is mainly where I want to go, the admission office said that my AA is good and to just focus on advancing in my core classes (English, science, math) and that CS-AA does not really give me an advantage. Can anyone help me on what my best options are now? Thank you a lot.

What were some of the difficulties QA professionals used to face before graduating vs. nowadays How can I excel at quality assurance? #Spring25?

This goes specially in software but open to other areas. I'm currently a Junior in Computer Science and it's been a long road to get to this point, even admitting that I don't like coding that much. I've realized however that I do enjoy Quality Assurance and testing. I was wondering how professionals have overcome and even got to the point where they realized they liked QA and would like to build their career around it. #Spring25

As someone interested in pursuing a career in cyber-security, I'm curious about what daily work actually looks like. Do cyber-security professionals typically work alone or as part of a team How are tasks usually assigned, do they involve long-term projects that last for months, or are there more short-term, fast-paced assignments? I’d like to understand what the workflow and collaboration style is like in this field. #Spring25?

I'm a senior in high school and planning to major in computer science or cybersecurity in college. I really enjoy math-related classes like Pre-Calculus, Algebra, and Robotics, and I’m good with technology. I also like programming, building robots, and playing video games in my free time. As someone interested in a cyber-security career, I'm wondering what the actual work environment is like. Do professionals in this field usually work on teams or more independently? Are cyber-security projects typically long-term (spanning months) or more short and fast-paced? I’d love to understand what a typical workflow looks like in this field.
