Mike’s Answer

Hey Winnie,

This is a question so many people ask, but I'd suggest looking at it from another perspective.

Promotion can be seen a byproduct of mastering your current responsibilities and work, and then you can move on to take on new challenges. One of the biggest disservices you can do to someone's career is to promote them too rapidly without giving them enough time to develop mastery of their current work.

Take your time during the early parts of your career and focus on mastering the core skills for your career, and work for people who will give you feedback and help you master those skills.

The promotions will come from mastering your skills.

Hope this helps!

Anna’s Answer

Hi Winnie,

It highly depends on a company and their current structure.

Good companies creates opportunities for employees but if structure is flat and there is not possibility to move to other teams it might take a while.

Start ups usually allows for quick promotions.

Best,
Ana

Anny’s Answer

Hi, Winnie,
The number of years to get a promotion depends on both the individual and the company. An individual may have great skills and the potential for leadership and may be promoted earlier than her peers when a position opens up. However, an individual with the same skills may not get promoted in a different company because that company does not want to have a lot of "layers of management" within their organization.

In addition to promotions, some questions to ask include:
1. Is my career rewarding?
2. Am I continually learning and contributing to this position?
3. Am I being fairly rewarded for my work?

I hope this helps!
