Katie’s Answer

The best way to get preemptive experience in the accounting field is through internships. By having an internship, you will be able to see what area of accounting that you like best, while getting real life experience. It will also look great on a resume after you have graduated and are looking for a full time job. Your college might have a career counseling center and would be able to help you finding an internship in the accounting field.

Susana’s Answer

Similar to the other responses, I also recommend internships to get experience in the accounting field. This is exactly how I started my career in accounting. I recommend that you find out about internship opportunities through the College of Business at your university. At my university, they had student organizations for accounting students where you were able to shadow accountants in the industry, participate in summer internships and even attend social events to network with accountants.

Ally’s Answer

Internships are a great way to get experience in any industry. For the accounting industry, once you have taken a couple of the intro classes, there are some bookkeeping jobs that may be available, full or part-time while you are in school.

Melissa’s Answer

To get experience in the accounting field I would focus on the following

1. Speak to the College of Business career center for opportunities

2. Attend Career Fairs, including ones specific to accounting students (Meet the Firms)

3. Network with professionals and teachers who might be aware of openings.

4. Look to attend early ID programs at accounting firms (Summer leadership programs)
