How can I Jumpstart my Career to become a Fish and Game Warden?

I live in Minnesota, and I love watching the Fish and Game Warden shows, and I have a passion for wildlife and law management. I also know that you need to pass exams and fitness tests, as well as a 2-4 year degree.

The first, step is to get a 4-year degree with enough science and environmental background. I hate to say that as I am a pro-2-year college and community college but you need that little piece of paper that says you have 4 years of schooling to get a higher-paying job. Look for a wildlife and fisheries management degree or something similar. Also, have a backup plan if that does not work out as most Game warden positions require a lot of experience. When going to school this is where you get your experience by volunteering with the local department of natural resources. Plus talk to professors to get areas to gain more experience. If you look at the University of Tennessee Knoxville Wildlife and fisheries management course is a great way to see what classes you would need to take. With the number of course credits and science, it can help you line up government jobs in the 0401 natural resources job field. That is a great backup plan if the game wardens do not have any spots available at the time you can go toward another career.

I would say your first step needs to be speaking with local Game Wardens, especially if you want to remain in your region. Get their first hand experience. They can better tell you the prerequisites you need to fulfill and the college programs/courses you should look into. If you're not tied into staying in Minnesota, I would recommend Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College In Georgia. We have started one of the first college programs in the nation specifically pertaining to natural resources law enforcement. NR law enforcement is tougher than most people realize. Not only do you have to learn the laws pertaining to the job like a normal LEO, but you also have to learn the wild species around you and spend the vast majority of your time outdoors, no matter the weather or conditions. But I think that most game wardens will agree that it is a very rewarding career protecting our natural resources for everyone!
