What are the types of opportunities you have that render hours to students?

I'm a Grade 11 student with great communication skills, listening skills and a positive attitude towards work.

I'm a dog lover, I am interested in sports, health care and fashion.
My hobbies are learning new skills, cooking and watching movies.

I look forward to volunteering with a great organization to learn new skills, gain experience and earn 40 hours required for my High School graduation.

Thank you comment icon As others have mentioned, we don't have any opportunities for students BUT we can still help! Hopefully, professionals can share some advice that might help explore your interests and hobbies while also volunteering. Gurpreet Lally, Admin

Hi Gladys,

Thank you for your question and it's so nice to see you have interest in volunteering and making an impact in our world.

As others have shared, search for "Volunteer opportunities in my area" and you may find opportunities to use your listening skills positive attitude to help others. This can also help build your network of connections and may even lead to future opportunities.

Look for local shelters who may be in need of individuals to help with dog adoption events. Or local non-profits that hold fundraising walks or runs since you also have interest in sports and health care.

You may also want to consider virtual volunteering opportunities. Check out sites like Zooniverse.org or Letters Against Depression where you can volunteer your time online or from home to help others.

Best wishes to you in your educational and career goals!

Melisa recommends the following next steps:

Check-out http://zooniverse.org for unique online/virtual volunteer opportunities.
Visit http://lettersagainst.org to learn more about how volunteers can help by writing letters to people going through depression, across the globe.
Sites like http://volunteermatch.org can help you find local organizations near you that are looking for help.

I'm not sure that this is the place to find those opportunities, but others can offer advice. If you love animals, you can consider looking up a local animal shelter to volunteer with them. If you like working with kids, you can try peer tutoring or mentorship programs; there should be programs through the city or through local community centers. In general, just look up volunteer opportunities in your local area; we have websites like Hands on __ (city name) in the US where non-profits and other organizations can add listing for volunteer shifts. Opportunity ideas: working for a community garden, working with the park service, help sort food/clothing donations or serve food at food banks and churches/shelters, etc. There are a lot of opportunities! Good luck!

Looks like you've got lots of great answers here! Like others said, I would recommend checking out www.volunteermatch.org or your local Hands On to see what kind of opportunities are out there - there are likely hundreds of ways to get involved in your community.

Also, if there's an organization you're REALLY interested in but don't see something that is a good fit, don't be afraid to reach out to the organization anyway! One of my favorite volunteer opportunities came from me reaching out and saying I didn't see anything that worked with my schedule but that I really wanted to help - and we came up with something that worked great for me and for the org!

There are many opportunities available for students to earn volunteer hours and gain valuable experience. Here are some ideas that may align with your interests:

Animal shelters or rescue organizations: As a dog lover, volunteering at an animal shelter or rescue organization may be a great fit. You could help with walking dogs, cleaning cages, or assisting with adoption events.

Sports teams or community centers: If you're interested in sports, consider volunteering with a local sports team or community center. You could help with coaching, refereeing, or organizing events.

Health care facilities: Volunteering at a hospital or other health care facility can be a great way to gain experience in the health care field. You could assist with patient care, administrative tasks, or fundraising events.

Fashion or retail organizations: If you're interested in fashion, consider volunteering at a local boutique or retail organization. You could help with visual merchandising, customer service, or social media management.

Non-profit organizations: There are many non-profit organizations that offer volunteer opportunities across a variety of fields. You could help with fundraising, event planning, or administrative tasks.

Hi Gladys- i love Katherineā€™s answer. She referred to the non-profit search and plugging in your city, Yelp provides a top 10 set of agencies. Take a look at those but donā€™t quit until you find a fit. Volunteering is so rewarding. You will find your niche. Reach out if you want more thoughts.

You might try checking Volunteer Toronto (https://www.volunteertoronto.ca/). Most opportunities are in Toronto, but I see one in Mississauga.
