Ryan’s Answer

Hi Dylan,

Being successful and starting a business are not mutually exclusive. You can be very successful without starting a business. But first, I would consider what you define as success and being successful. If you equate starting a business and having success with that business, then I would want you to consider a few things:

1. Ask yourself "WHY?"
2. Then define what success looks like.
3. Then define your business.

Once you define the above, you will be more in alignment with what you want and why. This is the foundation of building anything, including a business. I would also suggest dedicating plenty of time to understanding what you are passionate about. If you go into business without a broad passion for it, it will be difficult to self-regulate and motivate during hardships and challenges.

Here are some tips to help you on your path to success:

1. Set clear goals: Know what you want to achieve and set clear, measurable goals to help you get there.

2. Develop a plan: Create a roadmap that outlines the steps you need to take to achieve your goals.

3. Stay focused: Stay committed to your goals, even when faced with setbacks or challenges.

4. Continuously learn and improve: Stay curious and continue learning new skills and knowledge to improve your abilities and stay competitive.

5. Build a strong network: Surround yourself with supportive people who can offer advice, mentorship, and opportunities.

6. Take calculated risks: Be willing to take risks and try new things, but do so in a thoughtful, strategic way.

7. Stay resilient: Success is not always a straight line. Stay resilient and adapt to changes or obstacles that come your way.

Starting a business can be a rewarding and challenging experience. Here are some steps you can take to start your own business:

1. Identify a need: Find a product or service that meets a need or solves a problem for customers.

2. Develop a business plan: Create a plan that outlines your business goals, strategies, and financial projections.

3. Register your business: Register your business and obtain any necessary licenses and permits.

4. Develop your product or service: Develop your product or service and test it with potential customers.

5. Establish your brand: Develop your brand identity and message, and create a marketing strategy to reach your target audience.

6. Launch your business: Launch your business and start building relationships with customers and partners.

7. Stay focused and adaptable: Stay focused on your goals, but be adaptable to changes or opportunities that arise along the way.

Remember, starting a business takes time, effort, and dedication. Stay committed to your vision and work hard to make it a reality.

Putta’s Answer

Ask yourself what do you want to be successful at? Define your goal. Write it down in a journal. Come up with a roadmap of ways to reach your goal. Set short term targets. Allocate time to work on the targets. Be easy on yourself and ensure that you are actually enjoying the process of reaching your goal. According to many studies consistency is the key to be successful. So, be perseverant and consistent with whatever you do to be successful.

Shimonah’s Answer

You can become successful by identifying something you are passionate about and staying the course! Network with individuals who are successful in that field, look for learning opportunities, seek internship opportunities, attend symposiums, speak your dreams into existence by talking about your goals - it will keep you top of mind when opportunities present themselves, be intentional. I'd also recommend reading Malcolm Gladwell's book, Outliers. In the book, Malcolm Gladwell takes you on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers"--the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful. He asks the question: what makes high-achievers different? It can be a guide to understanding success.

Jessica’s Answer

As the others have said, success can mean a lot of things. Think about what success means for you. Come up with some goals. Think about how your business goals would impact your personal / family life. Do they have a happy balance for you to be successful in your career pursuits as well as successful in your personal life.

Best,
Jess

Hi, Dylan,
Good question. Success in life is what we all want. In your question, you indicated that developing a business was your vision of success. Running your own business can be successful, but I encourage you to leave open other avenues as well, and to also consider what success will be. Is it more money? Is it a family with which to share your life? Is it the feeling of being valued and content at the end of each day? Consider also the amount of time you want to devote to your career, vs. the time you want to be free for your other pursuits? Running a business, for example, can easily demand your presence six (or even seven) days a week. That can be part of the enjoyment of the business, but only if that is part of your vision. My suggestion at this point is to focus on your education, as the more you know, the more opportunities will be open to you. For all of this, I strongly encourage you to put your thoughts down on paper, and to keep a running log of your thoughts and visions. Seeing your ideas on paper can be highly empowering in expanding your ideas. All the best to you.

Christine’s Answer

Being successful can mean so many things. To me, it is having a vision and working backward on how to get there. You need to know what you want to accomplish or what your end goal is and create ways for you to get there. Do it in small steps and count them as a victory as you meet them.

Terresa’s Answer

I have always been successful with setting short term goals, making a plan and setting a dead line for execution of the plan. I recognize all my strengths good and bad and play to the best of myself. I find it works best for me if I do not take on more than I can accomplish even if that means it takes a little longer. Failure is part of the learning curve to success. I embrace it, own it and push through it. Remember to reward yourself every step you move forward and give yourself a break if you have to take a step backwards. We are all building our best selves on top of former versions so don't look back because you are not going that way.
