The best way to get a job is through LinkedIn you can get access to thousands of jobs free of cost just make your professional account and add all your detail to it. and apply for the relevant jobs you consider good for you. you will get a response from a recruiter or HR and you can meet up for the interview. Hi Kate,
I have done both freelance and full time work for a company. In the beginning of your career freelance can be good in order to build the portfolio you will need to apply to a desired company. But you will have to seek out your own clients, manage the communication with them and the financial side of the work which can be a burden. If you do not have a freelance opportunity start working on projects of your own, think of a design task and just execute it. Look at other designer's work for inspiration (Dribbble, Behance etc.).
My career as a graphic designer started as an intern and I was recommended by a teacher of mine to the company. I also have a degree in graphic design but this is not necessary as I have a myriad of friends who have not completed their education or have no formal education in the area at all but still are very good designers. Practice makes perfect.
Even if you do not have enough experience or a very profound portfolio do not be afraid to apply for jobs (use platforms like LinkedIn or other job posting websites that are popular in your area) because the right attitude and eagerness to learn and develop your skills matters a lot and the right company for you will give you a chance to start out in the industry.
Finding your first job does take time though and takes a lot of applications or communication with potential clients if you opt for freelance which should not discourage you (or you can luck out and land your first job/freelance gig right away :)
