Darren’s Answer

As a civil engineering project manager, I like the following traits in my staff:

  • Awareness of the particular task schedule and budget
  • Ability to prioritize work, when given multiple tasks
  • Having reasonable answers to reasonable questions
  • Taking 2-5 minutes to attempt to answer a question you have before coming to me for help (if schedule and budget allow)
  • Learning everyday - nobody is perfect at their job, not even your boss. We all make mistakes but we should also get better by learning from them.
  • Speaking up - your boss has a lot to do, don't assume they're always paying attention to all your needs. Be proactive if you have something to ask your boss.
