Amit’s Answer

Hi Manning, great question. Having a part time job in college is a great way to help cover some expenses . Before looking for a part time job, ensure that you are comfortable with your class schedule and have the availability to perform well in classes and your job. When I was in college, I worked in the library and it was great. It was minimal work, and I got to do homework on the job. I found the job through the university website job postings, I think its the best way to get a part time job in college. Colleges have jobs that are ideal for their students. Outside of the school, restaurants and jobs are usually hiring college students. If you are able to, geting an internship with a firm that pays throughout the year would be the best of both worlds, income + work experience that is great for after college years.

Amit gave you some great advice above, but wanted to chime in with a couple additional suggestions and comments. The first thing you should put some thought into is your "why". Are you looking for a part time job to get some extra spending money, for the resume builder, or both? You must always consider the work you want to do once you graduate from college. If you're unsure then really any job is a good learning experience and will demonstrate a hard work ethic to potential employers! If you do know what career you want to pursue then tailor the job you get to that industry/field. The best way to make sure future employers in that field will be impressed by that work experience is to see what those doing what you ultimately want to do did for work in college! Check out the next steps below:)

Lindsey recommends the following next steps:

Search LinkedIn for professionals who do the kind of work you want to do after college to see what part time work they did while in school.
Check out sites like RippleMatch.com. They match students with internships.
Visit Angel.co and create a profile. Start ups are a great place to get really good work experience!
