How is the future technology going to change how we live our day to day lives

Technology has always interested me. How people used to live their lives without the benefit of modern-day technology has always fascinated me. There is always a way to create something to improve the quality of life. I want to invent something that will help improve the quality of life for many people. #technology #career

Hi James,

Really cool question. Technology is rapidly advancing today and the rate of technological increase will only hasten as time goes on. The above answer is spot on in regards to IoT (my friend has a bluetooth enabled toothbrush that maps his mouth and shows him where he didn't brush) so I'll talk about another aspect of technological change that will alter the way that we live our lives and that is AI.

AI will be one of our greatest achievements if we are able to implement it and it will alter the way that many of us live and operate. AI will not only impact that job market significantly as it can perform many current jobs that human do but will be much quicker and accurate, but it will literally transform the way that we interact with and experience the world. AI can design infrastructure that is more efficient and allow us to get from point A to B quicker, AI can monitor data feeds to ensure traffic is flowing properly and adjust for variances, AI can monitor bank balance sheet and notify us in real time if there is fraud, AI can serve as a personal secretary and assist us in our day to day lives similar to that of a normal secretary etc. The possibilities of AI and its implementation and impact are truly endless. The efficiency and transformation that AI will bring about is almost mind boggling and having AI assist us in our lives isn't that far over the horizon.

I could go on but It is easy to ramble on and on about how great AI is and what the impact of AI will be on our world. I encourage you to research AI and the kinds of ways people are thinking of bringing AI to.

I hope this helps pique your interest regarding AI.

Best,

Austin

Hello James!

This is an AWESOME question, with so many answers. I really love your passion for working to make the world a better place as well. Below are a few examples of one technology I'm most excited for that we work on here at AT&T, IoT (Internet of Things). This is one of the coolest areas continuing to develop in my mind. IoT, in a super general sense, is enabling previously 'dumb' devices with sensors and connectivity. When I think of IoT, I think of Smart Cities, Smart Infrastructure working to improve the quality and safety of our lives.

  • The Smart Bridge: My favorite example is the following scenario. Imagine you and your family are going to the movies. Dinner takes a little longer to prepare than you expected so your phone realizes you haven't left the house and automatically switches your show time to later in the evening to accomodate the change. You get into the car and it has automatically adjusted it's drive mode to heavy rain as there is a serious storm going on. The car does not require a driver and you are able to continue to socialize with your family on the way to the movie. You notice the car is taking a longer route than normal and you inquire why. It turns out the bridge you normally take to get into town had sensors poured into the concrete when it was built and they have flagged that the bridge may not be safe in current conditions. Rather then temping the bridge or unknowingly exposing you and your family to a dangerous situation, the car has automatically altered course. A bit extreme but I LOVE IoT.
  • Elder Care: This is an example that hits close to home for me. Helping elders remain in their homes and stay autonomous is a very difficult challenge. Placing IoT sensors throughout the home is a great way to help support them while respecting their privacy. One solution we are working to develop at AT&T is a series of sensors throughout the elders home. A motion sensor under the bed shows that they woke up in the morning. A sensor on their pill containers show that they have accessed their pills that day. Voice enabled devices in the home allow them to call for help should they fall. As my grandmother ages, I look forward to getting these systems installed for her so that she can stay in her home as long as possible in a safe manor.

There are so many more technologies and use cases, but these are hopefully a good place to start. I wish you luck in your career path James!
